25 years and counting
MineFill Services was established in 1999 in Seattle, Washington, providing specialist technical advice in mine backfill to clients worldwide. It was founded by Dr. David Stone. David has focussed his career on mine backfill; his dedication and advancement of the technology is globally recognised and he is considered to have an industry leading reputation in the field.
Since conception MineFill has flourished and its expertise became recognised globally as a leader in mine backfill engineering design. MineFill has grown its team with additional key personnel including technical experts who provide specialised services to mine owners, plant designers and other backfill industry consultants.
In 2020 MineFill announced the startup of its new Australian registered corporate entity, MineFill Services Pty Ltd, led by our new Managing Director, Richard Pearce. MineFill is now a “one-stop-shop” providing mine backfill system solutions in the mineral resources sector all while not losing its focus to build a brand name recognised as a leader, combining backfill technologies with innovation, competitiveness and quality outcomes as the cornerstones.
MineFill expanded its technical team, with the addition of Mat Revell and Matt Helinski, both recognised global experts in mine backfill. ISO9001:21015 Quality Management Systems certification was also obtained in 2021 to support MineFill’s expansion into detailed design and construction and MineFill now has affiliations with Backfill Pipeline Solutions (BPS) which provides end users solutions for backfill piping and Backfill Testing Services (BTS) which manages all our testing requirements.
MineFill now has a solid list of references for detailed engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) projects having delivered the Newmont – Telfer Rey Paste System, Gold Fields – St Ives Invincible Reclaim Paste Plant, Alkane Resources – Tomingley Fresh Tails Paste System, and Barrick – Jabal Sayid Paste Pump Expansion to name a few. MineFill now boasts a strong reference list of design and construct projects along with countless technical consulting studies.
Looking to the future as MineFill celebrates 25 years in the industry, it has a global team providing technical and EPC/EPCM services globally with numerous studies and several EPC projects underway.

MineFill’s 20th year in the backfill industry brought a lot of changes and growth to ensure we are able to continue to meet the growing demand for our services. We recently incorporated a new entity in Australia to lead our new EPC services group, we expanded our Seattle laboratory capabilities, and added two new laboratories in Belgrade, Serbia and Newcastle, Australia. MineFill have added some significant talent to our team and we look forward to the next 20 years.
MineFill Services offers a full suite of mine backfill services from concept to closure. Our core services range from early project scoping phase with test work and backfill geomechanics (mix designs and mix optimisation, strength assessments, numerical modeling) and flow seamlessly through to complete plant engineering, procurement and construction works. This unique business model offers unrivaled value to customers with a maintained intimate knowledge of each project resulting in optimal solutions and outcomes.
We have built a skilled team of backfill experts to provide industry leading knowledge and innovative solutions. Our backfill expertise encompasses the full spectrum of paste thickened tailings, cemented rockfill, hydraulic backfill and paste backfill. The primary focus of our expertise is underground metal mining for both base metals and precious metals, however our clients have included uranium, diamonds, coal, potash and soda ash (trona).
Our backfill involvement begins at the initial thoughts of backfill being utilised in a mine. We provide scoping and feasibility studies for backfill systems including conceptual level to basic engineering level designs, equipment sizing and selection, capital and operating costs, and project scheduling.
Following early-involvement work to quantify the viability of backfill for a mine, we continue to build on our relationship with our clients and move to the project realisation phase. We offer our clients market leading designs in efficient and competitive packages aligned to the client needs and limitations. Our project implementation team facilitates the detailed engineering, procurement and construction of the desired backfill solution. We pride ourselves on delivering a finessed solution to our clients with provision of process performance guarantees and we put in every effort to make sure all the fine details are addressed to ensure our clients are pleased with the project outcome.
MineFill has significant expertise in backfill operations and provides auditing and advice to backfill operations worldwide. Our services include backfill quality assessment, design of QA/QC programs, binder optimisation, and troubleshooting of operational issues in backfill plants and reticulation systems.
MineFill’s expertise does not end at the surface, we are a total system specialist covering the underground backfill reticulation system including pipeline analysis, pipe selection and sizing, instrumentation and monitoring, barricade designs, and pump selection.
